The Rotary Club, the Svoboda Center for Civic Engagement at St. Olaf College, the League of Women Voters of Northfield and Cannon Falls, and the Northfield Public Library, along with other partners, are joining forces to host a free screening of the 2023 documentary film, "Join or Die" at St. Olaf College's Viking Theater. Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly... What can we do about it? Directed by Rebecca Davis & Pete Davis The screening will be followed by a discussion. What is Camp RYLA: The purpose of Camp RYLA is to awaken the leadership potential of high school students. See the Camp RYLA website at www.campryla.org as well as the attached flyer for this year's camp.
When & Where: Camp begins Friday, April 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Camp St. Croix near Hudson, Wisconsin, and ends at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the St. Paul Intercontinental Hotel. From Friday evening to early Tuesday morning, the program takes place at Camp St. Croix. On Tuesday, a bus will take students to the St. Paul Intercontinental Hotel for the Awards Luncheon in conjunction with the St. Paul Rotary Club meeting. Who should attend: Rotary Clubs from Districts 5960 and 5950 may sponsor students to attend Camp RYLA. We are planning for 84-100 students this year. Our programming targets juniors in high school, but we will accept sophomores and seniors. We can accept up to six students from any particular school and prefer an even match of genders. Transportation: The Rotary Club is responsible for your students’ transportation from their home to Camp St. Croix on April 24th and from St. Paul to their home on April 28th. Please note: We do not allow students to drive their own cars to Camp! Cost: Clubs pay $500 per student sponsored. There is no cost to the participating students. Please consider supporting camp by sponsoring a student even if your club has problems recruiting students. We will find students from other clubs if your club is unable to! Dinner followed by a short program will include introductions and opportunities to support our outbounds as they go abroad this summer and our inbounds as they prepare to return to their home countries.
